Permissions

Which Discord permissions Evil6 needs, why, and how the role hierarchy works.

The invite link only requests the permissions Evil6 actually needs for its features โ€“ no blanket Administrator permission. Here's what each one is for.

PermissionWhy Evil6 needs it
View ChannelsSee the channels Evil6 works in.
Send MessagesReplies, log entries, level-ups, giveaways, polls, welcome messages.
Manage MessagesDelete messages โ€“ AutoMod, Gulag, /mod purge.
Embed LinksSend embeds: logs, welcome embeds, ticket panels, the Gulag warning.
Attach FilesAttach the text-file protocol of bulk deletions to the log.
Read Message HistoryWork with existing messages, e.g. when deleting several at once.
Add ReactionsAdd reactions to messages.
Use External EmojisUse emojis from other servers in messages and embeds.
Manage ChannelsCreate the Gulag, ticket and log channels, lock channels during a lockdown, restore backups.
Manage RolesAutoroles, temporary roles, level rewards, the mute role, restoring backups.
Manage ThreadsModerate threads.
Manage ServerRead server data that Discord only shares with this permission, e.g. invites for invite logging.
Kick MembersKick via /mod kick, Gulag, Anti-Raid and warning escalation.
Ban MembersBan and softban via commands, Gulag, Anti-Raid and AutoMod.
Timeout MembersTimeouts via /mod timeout and AutoMod.
View Audit LogShow which moderator did something in moderation logs.
ConnectVoice permission requested for voice-related features.

If a permission is missing, only the feature that needs it stops working โ€“ everything else keeps running. You can re-authorize Evil6 with the invite link at any time to add missing permissions.

Alternative: Administrator #

Instead of individual permissions you can give a bot Administrator (permissions=8). It's simpler because channel overwrites no longer matter โ€“ but less trustworthy, because the bot can then do anything. We recommend the regular link with individual permissions.

Role hierarchy #

Regardless of permissions, Discord enforces:

  • Evil6 can only give or remove roles that are below its highest role.
  • Evil6 can only kick, ban or time out members whose highest role is below Evil6's.
  • No bot can moderate the server owner.

So move Evil6's role as high as possible in Server Settings โ†’ Roles โ€“ at least above every role it should manage.

Who can use which commands #

Every command in these docs shows who may use it:

Everyone
Every member of the server.
Moderators
Members with the Discord permission shown, e.g. Kick Members or Manage Messages.
Admins
Members with Manage Server, Manage Roles or Administrator โ€“ as shown for the command.
